Painter
My work is about nature, memory, connection, color and design. Entering a landscape or interior environment I am intrigued by the idea of multiple possible realities happening simultaneously, and how I can translate this idea visually. I work within the traditions of indirect painting, and build my imagery through detailed drawing and multiple layers of transparent paint. This method of working takes time. It is a tool that forces me to stay in the painting, and to pay close attention. An alternate world hidden beneath the surface emerges. History merges with the present. The painting becomes a force field against the passing of time. My paintings are primarily mixed media, with the surface built from prints, dyed papers, fabric, plant material and oil paint. I aim for layers of time compressed, interwoven moments and a fleeting sense of place and time. Each layer has a history and an energy that might be hidden from view but affects the whole. I lived year round as a working artist on Nantucket Island for thirty five years, and continue to maintain valued friendships and strong emotional ties. I now equally love and am inspired by living in midcoast Maine with my husband and dog Scout.
