Matthew Bielen
Painter

Matthew Bielen (b.1986)  is a Massachusetts-based contemporary artist. His work incorporates New England’s Maritime and natural history into fluid, hypnotizing acrylic paintings. His art hones in on moments from the past that continue to influence our current environment and the future of America, as well as the planet.

“I create works that are inspired by the reciprocal relationship between humans and nature. Our ongoing, turbulent history with the sea, as well as coastal New England’s storied past are recurring subjects in my art that become abstract and meditative. My work juxtaposes organic forms with heavy-handed, synthetic planes and structures, using gesture and color to create a visual language that seeks to convey a feeling that words can’t.”

Matthew Bielen attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston where he began to explore abstraction under Bill Flynn and began visiting Cape Cod on family vacations. He became infatuated with the rawness of the Outer Cape, its incredible history, and the unprejudiced locals of Provincetown.

Bielen loves the play between paint and the natural elements. “The results achieved when the acrylic medium meets water and air can be therapeutic and at other times strangely alarming.”

Matthew Bielen’s art is widely collected from New England to New York to Hong Kong. He has been a visiting artist at the Artists Association of Nantucket and is represented by Four Eleven Gallery, Provincetown and Bicycle Fine Art, NYC.
